Imagine moving into the perfect apartment, only to discover that it's haunted. This spectral roommate creeps through the rooms, opens and shuts cabinets in the kitchen, and plays piano at all hours of the night. Can anyone get rid of it? Or is this poltergeist here to stay?

New Kindle Short Story: "The Door Up There"

A father and his daughter are out camping one night, when they find a door suspended in the sky, capturing their attention and their curiosity. Something strange has come to visit, and no one's going to sleep until they find out who, or what, it is!

I lifted my daughter Samantha into my arms and held her hand and looked straight up. There in the sky, in front of a sparkling garden of stars, was a door, just as she'd told me back in the tent. Just an ordinary door with a steel knob, facing the ground, suspended in the air with no frame and no wall and nothing to hang from.

"I'm sorry I didn't believe you," I said. Of course I'd thought it was a six-year-old's idea of a joke, or a cute little story she'd made up for herself.

"It's okay, Daddy," she said. "Where do you think it goes?"

I heard a ruffling in the grass, but it was probably some nocturnal varmint. "That's a very good question. I suppose it could go just about anywhere."

"Like another country? Or another planet? Or another galaxy?"

"Don't see why not," I said. Though if it came from outer space, why would it look like a regular door, like you'd see in any home? You'd expect something alien to look alien, right? "We'd have to open it to know for sure."

Sammy stretched her arm up toward the door. "Daddy, I wanna knock. Give me a boost."

"Even if I did," I said, "you still wouldn't be able to reach it. It's too high. Besides, we don't know why it's there. Somebody might not want us to knock."

"Who?"

"Your guess is as good as mine." I had to admit, I'd gotten a little curious about meeting our new neighbors myself. Whoever or whatever had put it there, they'd left it awfully close to the campsite where I'd been spending a quiet weekend with my little girl. But why? Whether or not they wanted to be disturbed, they'd disturbed us. Or at least piqued our interest. Almost as if they wanted us to find it.

Extra Illustrations for my Short Stories

In case it's not clear, I do most of my own illustrations. Also, more recently, I've been getting more practice in digital art and posting most of the results on my Instagram. They include redraws of Final Fantasy monster sprites (up next is Ochu), and sketches and new illustrations based on my stories. For example:
