New short story, "First Defusion," is now available!

A little later than usual, but here it is:

As a child on the planet Vemmler, Larin Nichols was blinded and scarred by a forgotten explosive from an old war. Now she uses her cybernetic eyes to work in search-and-rescue on the frontier. When two children get trapped in a cave, Larin finds herself having to defuse the same type of bomb that injured her and killed a dear friend. She's done well in simulations, but this is the real thing, armed and ready to detonate. Only by going in and staring death right in the face will Larin save these kids.

When writing this story, I liked coming up with the logistical problem of a mine that only activates when you get too close, and only detonates when you get too far away. The cover was a particular challenge--for one thing, I had to figure out how to draw crystals, and with the sphere in front, had to do a lot of overpainting to get the panel the way I wanted. The mosaic effect represents Larin's ability to shift her vision outside the normally visible spectrum.

"First Defusion" is just $2.99, and exclusively available on Amazon Kindle. Click here to purchase. If you have Kindle Unlimited, you can read it for free, and I still get royalties.

Don't forget to subscribe via email or RSS, and share on Facebook, Twitter, and elsewhere!
